Covering a whole household with one VPN

Two ways to do it, and the cheaper one is the one most comparison pages leave out.

Count the devices honestly

Most plans allow a fixed number of simultaneous connections — five, ten, or unlimited depending on the provider. The count that matters is devices connected at the same time, not devices you own, and it adds up faster than people expect: phones, laptops, tablets, a games console, a TV.

A household of four is usually eight to twelve devices. If a plan allows five, someone is going to be quietly disconnected at the wrong moment, and it will not be obvious why.

Option one: install it on each device

Straightforward, and it has one real advantage: each device can be set differently. The laptop can be on a VPN while the TV is not, which matters more than it sounds — streaming services and banking apps both behave oddly through a VPN.

The cost is that everyone has to remember, and phones need the app configured to reconnect automatically or it silently stops.

Option two: run it on the router

The whole house is covered by one connection, including devices that cannot run VPN software at all — a smart TV, a console, a printer. It also counts as a single connection against your plan’s limit, so it is often the cheaper answer.

The trade-offs are real and worth knowing before you commit:

  • Not every router supports it. Many provider-supplied routers cannot, and replacing one is a cost the VPN plan will not mention.
  • Everything goes through it, including the things you would rather it did not. Streaming services routinely refuse to work through a VPN.
  • Turning it off for one device means changing the router. Some setups allow exceptions; many do not.
  • The router does the encryption. A modest router can become the bottleneck for the entire house — worth checking against the speed test before and after.

Before you pay for anything

If the household’s actual complaint is that the internet is slow, a VPN is not the thing to buy — and running one on the router will make it slower. Worth ruling that out first:
