About Circle Utility
A broadband diagnostic tool that tries to tell you the truth, including when the truth is that it does not know.
What this is
Most speed tests give you a number and leave you with it. A number is not an answer. If you measure 40 Mbps, the useful questions are whether that is what you are paying for, whether it is enough for your household, and if not, which part of the chain is losing it.
So this site is built around a diagnosis rather than a measurement: measure, diagnose, explain, fix — with the free fixes first, because most home broadband problems are fixed by moving a router or changing a band rather than by buying anything.
The rule we care most about
A single browser speed test cannot prove where a fault is. It measures the whole path between your device and a test server, and any link in that chain can be the narrow one.
That is not a caveat we put in the small print — it shapes the whole product. Every result states its confidence, the evidence behind it, and what we still do not know. Where the evidence does not support a conclusion, the tool says so and tells you which single further test would settle it. It will not manufacture certainty to look more useful.
How we intend to make money, and what that will not affect
Eventually: advertising, and referral commission if you choose to switch provider or buy networking equipment. None of that is active yet.
The part that matters is the separation. The diagnostic engine has no access to commercial data at all — not prices, not merchants, not commission rates. It can say that a category of product is relevant to your situation; it cannot see which one would pay us. That is enforced by how the code is built, not by a policy we promise to follow.
Free fixes always come first, and the site has to be worth using with every commercial element removed. If it is not, the commercial elements are doing too much work.
What we do not do
- We do not require an account. There is nothing to sign up for.
- We do not store your results, your IP address or your postcode.
- We do not publish invented statistics, reviews or testimonials.
- We do not rank providers by what they pay us.
- We do not claim a cause we cannot support.
