Is 5G worth paying more for?
Sometimes, and less often than the marketing implies. It depends almost entirely on what you use a phone for and where you are when you use it.
What 5G actually improves
Peak speed, by a lot, in the right place. Capacity, which matters more than peak speed for most people: a 5G cell can serve far more devices at once, so it holds up better in crowds. And latency, modestly.
Capacity is the underrated one. If your complaint is that data crawls at the station or in a busy town centre, that is congestion, and more capacity is the thing that actually fixes it.
Where it makes no difference at all
For messaging, email, maps, music, social media and video on a phone screen, 4G was already faster than needed. An HD video stream needs a few megabits per second; a decent 4G connection delivers many times that.
Above the speed a task requires, extra speed is invisible. A page cannot load in less than no time, and video does not look better because it arrived sooner — if anything it looks the same and costs more, because adaptive streaming picks a higher bitrate when the connection looks fast.
That last point is worth dwelling on: 5G can increase your data use without you changing anything you do, because video services choose a higher quality when they detect a faster connection. If your allowance started disappearing when you got a 5G phone, that is a likely reason.
Where it genuinely helps
Tethering a laptop regularly. This is the strongest case. A laptop can use the extra speed, and the extra capacity matters when the connection is doing real work.
Mobile broadband instead of a fixed line. Where a 5G router is the household connection, the difference is transformative rather than marginal.
Crowded places, routinely. Commuters and anyone who works in busy locations feel the capacity benefit daily.
Large downloads on the move. If you regularly pull down gigabytes away from Wi-Fi, the time saved is real.
The case where it is slower
The frequencies that give 5G its headline speeds do not travel as far or penetrate buildings as well as the lower bands 4G typically uses. At the edge of a 5G cell, a phone can hold onto a weak 5G signal and be slower than it would have been on 4G.
This is a real and common effect, not an edge case. If your data is slow while the phone shows 5G and a weak signal, force it to 4G for a day and see. Both Android and iOS let you prefer 4G and switching back takes seconds.

What “5G” on the screen does not tell you
Coverage is uneven and the label is not a guarantee of speed. Some 5G is delivered on repurposed lower-frequency spectrum and performs much like good 4G; the very fast kind needs higher bands with shorter range. Both show the same indicator.
So the honest way to decide is not from the badge but from experience: check the coverage maps for the places you actually spend time, and take the difference between plans as the price of an upgrade you may or may not notice.
How to decide
Work out the difference in total cost between the plans over the whole term, not the difference in monthly price — the contract cost checker does this. Then ask whether you tether, whether you spend time in crowded places, and whether your current connection is actually failing you at anything.
If the answer to all three is no, the extra is buying a number on a screen. If you tether or commute, it is buying something real.
