Why downloads take longer than the maths suggests

Dividing the file size by your connection speed gives the fastest a download could possibly go. Real transfers never quite reach it. Some capacity goes on the protocol overhead that carries the data, connections take a moment to reach full speed, and the server you are downloading from has its own limits — often lower than yours.

The estimate above allows for that. We show the theoretical best case too, so you can see the gap rather than having to trust a single number.

Megabits and megabytes are not the same thing

Broadband is sold in megabits per second (Mbps). Files are measured in megabytes (MB). There are eight bits in a byte, so a 100 Mbps connection downloads at roughly 12.5 MB/s at best. If a download looks eight times slower than you expected, this is usually why. Convert between the two.

If your download is much slower than this

First check whether you are on Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi, rather than the broadband line itself, is the most common cause of slow speeds inside a home, and the difference between a good and a poor spot can be substantial. It is also worth checking whether anything else in the house is using the connection heavily at the same time.

A single slow download does not prove your line is faulty. It takes more than one piece of evidence to say that with any confidence.
