Does a VPN slow your internet?

Yes — and a small amount of it is the VPN working properly rather than failing.

The short answer

A VPN will always cost you some speed. On a well-chosen nearby server with a modern protocol, expect to lose somewhere around 5% to 20%. If you are losing more than half, that is usually a specific and fixable problem rather than the price of encryption.

Why it happens at all

Two things, and the second matters far more than the first.

Encryption costs a little processing. Every packet is encrypted before it leaves your device and decrypted at the other end. On any device made in the last decade this is close to free — it is not usually the reason your connection feels slower.

Your traffic takes a longer route. Without a VPN, a request goes towards its destination directly. With one, it goes to the VPN server first, and then onward. If that server is in Amsterdam and you are in Manchester, every request and every reply makes that detour. If it is in Singapore, the detour is enormous. This is where most of the loss comes from, and it is why the server you pick matters more than the provider you pay.

How much is too much

We use three bands, and they are the same ones the VPN speed test applies:

  • Up to about a quarter of your speedminor. This is what a working VPN costs, so nothing here is misconfigured. A different provider or a nearer server network may still do better.
  • A quarter to about 60%noticeable. More than the encryption accounts for. Usually a distant or busy server.
  • More than 60%heavy. Something specific is responsible, and it is usually free to change.

One important caveat: if your connection is slow to begin with, percentages stop meaning much. Going from 2 Mbps to 1 Mbps is a “50% loss” that is mostly ordinary variation between two tests.

What usually fixes it

  1. Pick a closer server. Almost always the biggest single improvement, and it takes one tap. Unless you specifically need to appear in another country, nearest is fastest.
  2. Reconnect to get a less busy one. Servers get congested at peak times and most apps assign you one automatically.
  3. Check which protocol you are using. Newer protocols are lighter and faster; some apps still default to an older one for compatibility. The setting is usually under connection or protocol options.
  4. Turn off multi-hop for speed-sensitive things. Routing through two servers roughly doubles the distance. It is a deliberate privacy trade, not a fault.

Measuring it properly
